My sister-in-law wants to get a new serger, and thinks I can help.  Ha!  My serger thinks it's a prima donna, and I won't recommend it to anyone.

So - if you know a good workhorse serger that is probably still on the market, please speak up!  She edges napkins, and makes things like utility bags, probably not garments.  So cover stitch not a necessity, just good basic stitching.

Anyone got a recommendation?

Love the self threading Babylock - go for the basic one if that is how she uses it.  For someone who doesn't want to futz, threading those things can be a real inhibitor.

I'm a Janome fan -- their sergers are MyLock

I have one that is a 2/3/4 thread and cost ~$300 on an expo special

I have a Viking and like it.  It has a lever you can push aside to thread it.  I would have bought a Babylock but they were not sold here.  I knew I could get my serger serviced if I bought it locally but that company bit the dust too.  I have not had any problem with it so it's all good!  Linda

I sell Janome, Babylock, and Brother machines and sergers.  I OWN Babylock embroidery, Babylock Evolve Serger ( the Imagine is not the one with the cover stitch ), and a middle of the road Janome sewing machine for traveling and sewing while I have the embroidery machine in use.

The air threading of the Babylock is beyond comparison!  I will never own another.  Considering I used my first serger for almost 30 years, paying the price for the air threader ammortizes quite well over time.

Thanks for all the helpful advice!  She bought one of those ones with the puff of air, and is VERY happy about it.
